Creative Writing Advice for Beginners This does not only imply when writing novels, but writing poems as well. There are three different viewpoints in creative writing, and if not comfortable with it, it can prove very confusing. You can decide to tell your story in third person – omniscient or limited, or in first person. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. You have to decide on the type and style of story and the message you want to get across to people. First person would be the choice if you want it to be personal. Show your audience and don’t tell them. In creative writing, especially when writing poems, this is important. Allow the reader to see for himself what your character looks like. Mention habits, body language and little things they do. Does he stumble? This will make him clumsy. Are his eyes always wondering around? This shows distrust. This way your reader will create this character without having you going into detail to what he looks like. Keep editing. In creative writing, when writing poems or novels, writers edit as they write or get back to it later. You have to decide the best method. If you want your story published, make sure that wrong grammar and misspelled words are corrected. The punctuation is crucial if you want to get published. Even though you are not a professional, once you get published you will be. Don’t let rejection stop you. In creative writing, if you are writing poems or novels to be published, expect rejection. This doesn’t mean that you have be negative, just expect it, because your story might end up on the wrong desk and it won’t mean it is bad, but only because the editor does not publish stories like yours. His publishing house might only publish Romance and you handed him a Thriller. Don’t give up. There is a home for your story out there; you just have to find the right one. |
